2015 Hero Helps Community Summit set for April 10, 2015

A Community's Public Health Response to the Heroin Epidemic

The 2015 Hero Helps Community Summit is slated for Friday, April 10 at the Romeoville Athletic and Event Center in Romeoville, 55 Phelps Ave in Romeoville.

     This year’s event will focus on “Next Steps” in the community’s public health response to the heroin and other drug overdose epidemic  On this fourth annual event, HERO (Heroin Epidemic Resource Organization), Will County HELPS (Heroin Education Leads to Preventative Solutions) and the Southwest Coalition for Substance Abuse Issues have invited federal, state and county officials to share information about the latest legislation and public policy initiatives aimed to fight the heroin and other drug overdose epidemic.  

     “Valuable information will be presented about a wide range of prevention, treatment, law enforcement, and other strategies that communities can adopt in the fight against heroin,” said Paul Lauridsen, clinical director of Stepping Stones. “Sources will include the U.S. Office of National Drug Control 2014 Strategy, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration strategic initiatives, and the State of Illinois Heroin Task Force legislation and Young Adult Heroin Task Force report.”

     Families, public officials, law enforcement, health care providers, educators, and the public are all encouraged to attend and learn more about the heroin and other drug overdose crisis and potential solutions. The event includes a resource expo with representatives from more than 30 organizations available to provide information on their services.

     CPDUs, CMEs and CEUs are being provided for education, medical, social work professionals, licensed professional counselors, and addiction prevention, treatment and recovery support professionals.
