Workforce Services still providing help for job seekers

JOLIET – The doors to the Workforce Center of Will County may be closed during the coronavirus pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped the staff at the Workforce Services Division of Will County from assisting job seekers.

“We have been very busy,” said Erin Kohl, who holds multiple certifications, including Certified Professional Resume Writer, Certified Professional Career Coach and Global Career Development Facilitator, the highest credential in the field. She is one of four who has the GCDF certification in her office.

WSD’s Pam Rodriguez, who has the same credentials, said staff members are on social media “all day, every day” in order to keep job seekers engaged.

Rodriguez said, “We really beefed up our social media. We have a team working on that.”

But social media isn’t the only thing with which staffers are busy.

Want help with a resume? Resume Reviews are still available via email at careerservices@jobs4people.org. WSD has 10 Certified Professional Resume Writers on staff. Want help developing a new career plan? Call (815) 774-6354 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays, and in most cases get a return call the same day from one of the division’s 12 Certified Professional Career Coaches.

Once that resume is ready for potential employers to see, put it up on the resume gallery at jobs4people.org. Or look for jobs that seem intriguing on the job board. LinkedIn assistance is also available.

Rodriguez said, "This is the perfect time for job seekers to update their LinkedIn profiles." Job seekers can set up one-on-one sessions with her to help improve their profiles and ensure they are maximizing their LinkedIn profiles for job search. Requests for LinkedIn sessions can be made through the email and phone number above.

Check out the Workforce Center of Will County's Facebook page for archived workshops or Facebook Live events, as well as their website for updated information and YouTube channel. “There are tons of great content,” said Kohl.

Kohl and Rodriguez said so far they have been assisting a mix of those who have lost their jobs during the pandemic and those who were already searching for employment.

Rodriguez said some of those seeking help are looking for career changes.

One way to help people prepare for post-pandemic employment is teaching them about Allison.com, a site that offers free online learning with certificates.

“We’re definitely recommending that people update skills,” said Kohl. “Employers are going to ask, ‘what did you do during this time?’”

WSD is led by Director Susan Flessner and is under County Executive Larry Walsh’s office.
